A very brief overview on modal verbs. Follow the patterm.

modal verb - most common use - sample sentence(s)

can - ability, possibility, permission - "I can sing very well." (and that's true!)

may - permission, possibility - "May I ask you a question?"

might - remote possibility - "If he asks me out I might say yes... I might say no... well, we'll see."

will - a calculated possibility, a spontaneous decision - "I'll probably stay here for the weekend." / "You know what? I'll give you a call tomorrow. How about that?"

Use them to talk about the past (something that happened or didn't happen in the past)

could have done s.th. - hypothetical situation - "I can't believe you drove after all that beer you had. You could have crashed your car!"

should have done s.th. - criticism, regrets - "I failed the test. I should have studied harder."

might have done s.th. - remote possibility - "He didn't come back home last night. He might have slept over at his girlfriend's, or he might have fallen asleep at the bar... who knows?"

Qual a diferença entre "What's he like?" e "What does he look like?"???

Simples: o que você quer saber, sobre a personalidade ou sobre a aparência da pessoa?

Eu queria apresentar uma amiga minha de Brasília para um australiano que eu conheci no Rock in Rio. Na época eu morava em São Paulo. Ele estava lá passando férias. Combinamos com minha amiga de nos encontrarmos na Terra da Garoa para que ela pudesse conhecê-lo. No aeroporto, enquanto eu e o Jarrod esperávamos pelo vôo da Bárbara, ele me enchia de perguntas.

Jarrod: So, dude, what does she look like?

Bruno: Well, she's kind of short and average weight. She has brown eyes and long red hair.

Jarrod: Cool! And what's she like?

Bruno: She's a little shy, but she's a really nice girl. You're going to love her!

Practice Makes Perfect - Talkers and Thinkers

Let's take a quick look at the present perfect, shall we?

We tend to have trouble with that verb tense for two simple reasons: 1. we don't have anything like that in Portuguese; 2. we fear it! we dread it!

Yeah, admit it! You are too scared to use present perfect. And I'll tell you this, most of the times, so am I!

The good news is, it isn't as difficult as it seems, or as important. You'll see a lot of so-called fluent speakers avoiding it and yet communicanting effectively. Nevertheless, let's try to use it whenever possible. The more you use it, the more comfortable you'll feel by using it, the better you'll use it.

Present Perfect

You can use it to:

1. Talk about something that has happened. "When" is not important or you simply don't know, so you don't talk about it. You might, however, indicate a period of time. It's very common to use it to check preparations, tasks, and to talk about life experience. Check it out.

Mom: Have you done your homework (yet)?

Son: No, not yet. But I've already taken the trash out.

Husband: Have you packed everything you'll need?

Wife: I can't be sure. Let's see... I've packed my hair-straightener, my hairdryer, my make-up kit... oh, I haven't packed my Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus book!

Brazilian Exchange Student: Have you taken a shower today?

French Exchange Student: No, I haven't. But I've already taken a shower this week.

Bumper Stick (Adesivo de Pára-Choque): Have you hugged your child today?

John: Have you ever kissed a Lebanese girl?

Mark: No, I've never done that. Have you?

John: Yes, I have.

Mark: When did you do it?

John: Last night.

Perceba que no último diálogo o present perfect dá lugar pro simple past quando os caras entram em detalhes.

Is your wife in shape? - Thinkers and Talkers

This is not a joke (anymore).

Initially introduced as a joke in Finland, wife carrying has become a competitive sport in which male participants race through an obstacle course while carrying a female teammate. Carrying styles include piggyback, fireman's carry, and Estonian-style, in which the female participant hangs upside-down with her legs around the man's shoulders and her arms around his waist.

Do you have trouble using "if" to talk about possibilities in the future? Don't worry, be happy.

Remember, the idea is: something will happen if something else happens first. Difficult to understand? Let's move on to practice. Think about real life situations. You and your friends are talking about your plans for the weekend.

Your Friend: "So, what are you going to do next weekend?"

You: "If the weather is good, I'll go to the club."

The idea here is: you want to go to the club. But you need the weather to be good to go to the club.

Pay attention to the structure.

If "simple present", "simple future".

It's always possible to invert the sentence. Watch this:

"I'll go to the club if the weather is good."

But be careful. If you invert it, pay attention to where "if" is, because it's always close to the "simple present". Also, you're not going to use the comma if you invert it.

There are ways for you to make this structure more interesting. Instead of using "simple future" all the time, you could use:

- going to

"If I have enough money, I'm going to travel abroad."

- simple future with probably

"If I work hard, I'll probably get a promotion."

- might (this indicates you have no idea about what's going to happen, anything could happen.)

Your friend: "What are you going to do on your next vacation?"

You: "I have no idea. If I have enough money, I might take a French course in Canada... or I might take a cruise with my wife. If I don't have money, I might stay home... or I might spend sometime with my mother-in-law."

You gotta walk the walk - Anyone

Eu vejo muita gente procurando uma fórmula secreta pra fazer um monte de coisas: pra casar, pra ficar rico, pra aprender inglês... É, vamos falar do que estamos aqui pra discutir, né?

A verdade mesmo é que não existe fórmula. Só uma coisa é certa, cê tem que criar oportunidades de ter contato com a língua.

Tem gente que gosta de música, tem gente que gosta de ler, tem gente que gosta de cinema... e todas essas atividades podem te ajudar a desenvolver. O importante é saber separar a hora de levar a namorada pra pegar um cineminha da hora de sentar pra destrinchar um filme. Tem que ter um grau de dedicação aí!

Para um cara que ainda tá engatinhando em inglês, essas coisas não são tão fáceis. Ele vai depender muito mais da ajuda que o professor puder dar, com dicas, com exercícios extras. Mas até esse cara precisa lembrar que a responsabilidade tá na mão dele. Se você ainda não consegue ler um livro em inglês, releia o que você trabalha na sua aula, refaça exercícios. O lance é estar em contato com a língua o tempo todo.

Pra galera com alguma bagagem, assistam Spider Man! Lembra o que o Uncle Ben fala para o Peter Parker: com grandes poderes surgem grandes responsabilidades. Quanto mais você se desenvolve, mais você é o responsável pelo seu desenvolvimento.

E nunca hesite em pedir ajuda pra quem tá na sua frente. Pode ser seu professor, mas também um amigo que sabe mais inglês que você. Quem já passou pelo que você está passando, pode certamente te mostrar alguns atalhos.

Mas, o mais importante de tudo isso é o seguinte: cê tem que querer e fazer por onde. Você pode estudar nas melhores escolas do Brasil e do mundo, mas se você não fizer a sua parte, não tem santo que te ajude, viu? Não tem fórmula, mas certamente, existem algumas coisinhas que funcionam pra todo mundo: ser assíduo e fazer a tarefa de casa.

p.s.: You gotta walk the walk. - No filme Full Metal Jacket (Nascido para Matar) de Stanley Kubrick tem uma cena muito legal quando dois soldados se estranham e começam a se peitar. Quando um deles (o Joker) dá uma resposta espertinha no outro (Animal Mother), esse outro pergunta pra ele: "You talk the talk. But do you walk the walk?" Minha interpretação (e outras sempre serão bem vindas), "cê fala bem, mas cê tem atitude?"

Gotta Go! - Anyone

Então, às vezes algumas pessoas me perguntam sobre o tal do "have got" com sentido de "have" (posse ou necessidade).

Não tem nada de mais. Olha aí.

Tanto faz eu dizer:

I have to go now.

ou

I've got to go now.

I have a car

ou

I've got a car.

Às vezes acontece de você ver um tal de "gotta" e não entender. É só uma corruptela, uma transformação que a estrutura sofre com o uso. Muito mais comum em linguagem falada, informal. E só acontece quando a estrutura é seguida de verbo, ou seja, com sentido de necessidade.

Tanto faz:

I've got to go now.

ou

I gotta go now.

ou, mais informal ainda (ou com mais pressa!), omitindo o sujeito

Gotta go.

Oh, look at the time! Gotta get up early, tomorrow. Gotta go!
